Directory Submissions

Directory Submission

So what exactly is directory submission, and how does it work?

Web directories are sites that specialize only in linking to other websites it’s like the virtual yellow pages. These sites exist only to steer customers to a particular company, brand or industry. A directory submission is simply the process of you, and your business, asking to be included within the directory.

But unlike the yellow pages of the past, you don’t need to buy an ad to be included, you just need to have good and relevant content. (Granted, some sites may charge a small submission fee, but it’s minimal considering the return on investment.)

Another difference from the yellow pages? More people will see your listing! These days, phone books often go straight from the mailbox into the recycling bin. Today’s savvy shoppers know they can find the service they need faster and easier online, so being included in local directories is key to the success of your business. You have to be where the people can find you, and today people are online. And finally, the yellow pages of old were only updated once a year. In today’s fast-paced world, an annual update simply wouldn’t do. Some start-up companies would have a grand opening and go out of business before the yellow pages even cycled back around. Of course, if that happened, they probably never bothered to include their business in an Internet directory!

Also, with your inclusion in a directory, you’ll have the opportunity to gain high-quality leads via the Internet. People who click on your listing in a directory can be re-directed to your site, which is called an “incoming back link. This is a great way to increase your visibility and improve your search engine rankings.

Where your company is categorized is typically based on the overall web site content rather than a group of keywords. Yet many times, sites are limited in the number of directories they can be included in.

The main thing to remember is that web directories are NOT simply search engines. The sites listed in the content of a directory must go through actual review before a directory will include that particular site in its listing. Site owners may submit their sites for inclusion to several directories, and editors at each respective directory will review the sites for appropriateness for inclusion.

So think of a web directory as a great big job interview for your business many apply, some are considered, but only a few make the cut.
